How do I overcome apathy?

This article is a part of the Ask Nick series, in which founder Nick Pernisco discusses some common topics on the Parkinson’s Warriors Facebook groups.

Just a reminder, Nick Pernisco is not a medical doctor. He is simply a very knowledgeable person with Parkinson’s. As such, do your own research and speak with your doctor before making any changes to your medical regime.

Apathy and fatigue are very common
Hey all, I also suffer from apathy as well as fatigue. The best way to overcome these, as much they’re possible to be overcome, is to force yourself into an activity, as small and simple as necessary.

Don’t feel like getting out of bed? Sit up and put your feet on the floor. Stretch goal: walk around your bedroom.

Don’t feel like going out? Dress warmly and go outside. Stretch goal: walk around the block.

Don’t feel like interacting with people? Go to the cafe and sit in silence while those around you chat amongst themselves. Stretch goal: say hello to the barista.

The bottom line is that we should attempt to do the things we can’t or don’t want to. The more we do it, the more the “doing muscle” will grow.
