Together, we made lives better in 2018. Your support allowed us to provide better care to even more people with Parkinson’s disease (PD), and launch new research initiatives and programs that have helped the 1 million people living with this disease in the U.S.
Because of YOU, we helped our Parkinson’s community in these life-changing ways:
1. Expanded the Center of Excellence network.
In 2018, we added three new Centers of Excellence to our global network: Cleveland Clinic; Medical University of South Carolina; and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Our 45 medical centers offer expert care to a combined 145,000 people with Parkinson’s. Find a Center of Excellence in your area.
2. Helped more people through our new Helpline hours
With your help, we were able to expand our Helpline hours to Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET. Call 1-800-4PD-INFO (473-4636) for the most current PD information, referrals and emotional support — in English and Spanish.
3. Warned a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator
The nation’s largest and most-utilized evaluator of charities gave the Parkinson’s Foundation four stars this year. Our CEO John Lehr shares why this motivates us to continue making life better for people with Parkinson’s.
4. Raised $5.1 million for Parkinson’s research and programs through 40 Moving Day events.
In 2018, we hosted the most Moving Day walks ever! Because of you, we can continue to support more national and local resources, while continuously advancing vital PD research.
5. Hosted our first-ever volunteer summit.
We hosted our top 150 volunteers — research advocates, fundraisers and community leaders — at an all-day event where we discussed how we could further our mission and help even more people nationwide.
6. Established a new estimate of people with PD in the U.S.
In 2018, we conducted the most comprehensive Parkinson’s Prevalence Project in 40 years, a study recently published in the scientific journal, npj Parkinson’s Disease.
7. Dedicated a summit to caregivers.
Our 2018 Parkinson’s Foundation Caregiver Summit | Cumbre Para Cuidadores, was designed for caregivers. Share the archived video of the event with a caregiver in your life.
8. Increased funding to $6.2 million to advance Parkinson’s research.
We funded 53 research grants that support the work of promising scientists in the PD field. Grants will support PD clinical trials, research centers, career development and fellowships for scientists who are actively studying Parkinson’s.
9. Launched our Genetics Initiative.
In 2018, we launched the first national Parkinson’s study to offer free genetic testing plus counseling for Parkinson’s-related genes through medical professionals. This study will help us increase clinical trial enrollment and learn even more about what causes this disease.
10. Hosted our first Parkinson’s Symposium in Puerto Rico.
Months after hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, the Parkinson’s Foundation hosted its first Parkinson’s conference in the Caribbean, where we listened to the needs of the Puerto Rico PD community and brought resources to help people live better lives.
As great as 2018 was, we are committed to taking progress to new heights in 2019 so we can continue providing everything you need to live better with Parkinson’s. Your continued support is the only way we can make that happen.
